Sydney wedding photographer and a country wedding in Queensland
As a Sydney Wedding Photographer, photographing in the countryside in Qld is not typical for me but I can see myself doing more of it. I had the greatest time photographing Nicole and Gregg’s wedding. It was held in the back country of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The town… sleepy little Conondale, not at all foreign to me as this was where I grew up and is only a stones throw away from Maleny, one of the most beautiful towns in Australia. Nicole’s parents and long time family friends, Darren and Ruth hosted the wedding on their property. It is absolutely beautiful farmland and simply the perfect place to have a country wedding.
I stayed at a marvellous airbnb in Maleny hosted by Pauline and Wayne. It was business as usual on the Saturday morning as I headed off to start photographing the guys at home in Maleny. This proved to be trickier than I expected as my mobile provider (who shall remain nameless) was pretty much useless here. I couldn’t get any reception and my google maps was not able to give me a location because of the lack of connection. Luckily I was able to get some wireless connection in town which allowed me access to google maps, and once the address was located, I was on my way. The boys were were very relaxed and Gregg just seemed to be enjoying everything about the day, the nerves just never showed.
I was now off to see Nicole down in my old hometown of Conondale. Many years of absence can change your memory of an area and even though much of the countryside was burned into my mind, some areas had become completely foreign to me. It’s an odd feeling to know you have passed a spot thousands of times but not have any recollection of it. Luckily I remembered the road to Nicole’s and found their home straight away. I hadn’t ever been to their property, however I knew it would be like all of the farmland in this area, and it was – just beautiful. Conondale and Maleny weddings have some of the greatest backdrops for photos in the country.
As usual, it was a bit of a mad house when I arrived with women running around preparing everything for the wedding day but Nicole was as chilled as any bride could be. She was beaming and I don’t think the smile left her face all morning. Once she was into her dress and we had taken the getting ready photos, it was time for her to start her walk to the ceremony. Their house was on top of a large hill and the ceremony and reception were at the bottom. Now this was not just some gentle slope, it was a steep, winding goat track down through thick foliage that she insisted her and the girls would traverse for a unique entrance. It really was quite something, seeing this stunning bride and her gorgeous bridesmaids filing down the side of the mountain through a lantern guided track.
The ceremony was set on the flat right beside a tree-lined creek, and with Nicole and Gregg’s vows and the celebrants delivery combining hilarity and love, we were all in tears and stitches throughout. Their marriage was sealed with the placing of the rings and a kiss, and then off to do the photos. Nicole and Gregg were so laid back and ready to do anything to get a great shot. I had them scale the mountain in their back yard for a stunning panoramic photo but other than that, there was nothing outrageous I had them do. You can see how picturesque this place is from the photos below.
The people in this area are your typical country folk, so welcoming and friendly, laid back and full of yarns. Many of the guests camped overnight on the property and followed it up the next morning with barbecued breakfast, some nursing very sore heads. It was a great night for all.
